A-LEVEL PRODUCT DESIGN By Jonathan Mak 2. Analysis of chosen product Function:  The tablet stand must be able to hold a tablet upright so that the consumer can view the screen without having to hold the tablet up for long periods of time  The stand must also be lightweight and able to be disassembled into a smaller form factor, to allow the product to be portable for the consumer, without causing problems in terms of weight and size  Prevent the tablet and stand from slipping when interacting with the tablet Purpose:  The purpose of the tablet stand is to hold a tablet for the consumer without having them hold it by hand for long periods of time.

Features of the product:  Rubber sponges located on both of the aluminium frames, used to prevent the stand from slipping when placed on a flat surface  Rubber sponges can also be found from where the tablet will sit and the bottom of the holder where the frames will be connected to, used to a2 product design coursework example the tablet and the stand from slipping on flat surfaces Consumer Needs Manufacturer Needs The tablet stand when purchased, must be able to hold a tablet without it slipping on a flat surface to fulfil its purpose.

The stand must be easy to mass produce without it having to cost a lot of money due to budget. The stand must be lightweight so that it can become portable, the size must be smaller or flatter when disassembled so that it can become portable without causing problems in terms of size and weight, a2 product design coursework example.

Shipping cost of the product must be low, where the manufacturer can ship a lot of their products to retail stores for very little a2 product design coursework example, this therefore means that the stand must be able to reduce in size so that multiple products can fit in one box. The stand must be able to fulfil its purpose as the consumer expects the product to be able to make a tablet be able to stand as labelled on the packaging. Materials must be common and cheap so that the manufacturer can make a high profit.

The stand must be easy to assemble so that the consumer would not have to long periods of time trying to put together the stand. The consumer would want the stand be able to hold different types of devices; like smartphone, apple tablets, android tablet etc.

Video of the assembly of the tablet stand. Introduction: This slide is a compilation of all the properties that have been discovered and are present on my chosen product 3. Health and a2 product design coursework example The tablet stand contains small parts, making it a safety hazard to children as it can be swallowed.

Lifespan The tablet stand has a lifetime that would last until the consumer changes their tablet Cost The product costs £1 from Poundland, therefore, the materials used must be cheap to manufacture Ease of use The tablet stand requires the consumer to assemble the tablet stand in 2 steps, this was done by the manufacturer so that it can attract a wide range of consumers Materials and Components  The stand is made out of aluminium.

Assembly  Putting together the stand is extremely easy as the aluminium frames simply slots into place to the holder, however, as the build quality is not perfect, it is really difficult when trying to slot the frames into one of the holes as parts of the a2 product design coursework example have polystyrene sticking out from the holes, obstructing the frames from being slotted into place.

Production method  The GPPS holder is manufactured through injection moulding where heated plastic is injected into a mould to make the shape of the holder. Conclusion: This slide I have noted down all the features that are present on the product that I have chosen including: function, size, health and safety, lifespan, a2 product design coursework example, cost, ease of use, materials and components, assembly, aesthetics, etc.

Keycriteriaofchosenproduct 4. Comparing my product with other similar products — Part 1 iPad mini 2 flip cover Function —  The use of this flip cover is to hold up the iPad mini 2, this cover is compatible with all of the mini-series via a magnetic strip.

Materials —  The flip cover is made out of plastic which covers the front part of the cover to protect the screen from scratches and gives it a leather like feel. Cost — The flip cover costed £8 which included the flip cover for the front and a case for the back, with the cover having multiple functions like being able to let the consumer view the tablet at 2 different angles and protecting the iPad mini.

Unlike my chosen product, a2 product design coursework example, the flip cover can double as a case which protects the entire iPad making it more effective compared to the a2 product design coursework example function of the tablet stand that costs £1. Ergonomics — The case only requires the consumer to push their tablet into the case in which it can then be secured without it falling out, allowing the consumer to change the angle at which they want to view their tablet from.

Unlike my chosen product, the tablet cannot be secured therefore it is able to fall out. Manufacturer —  The flip cover is very easy to mass produce due to its simplicity and lack of mechanisms, allowing the manufacturer to spend little amount of money into manufacturing this product, spending more money on the quality of the materials, a2 product design coursework example. This case can place the iPad at multiple angles:  Low angle  High angle which can change depending on how the consumer would want to view the screen Unlike my chosen product, this case allows the consumer to adjust the angle from which they view their tablet from, whereas the tablet stand is fixed in one position.

iPad mini 2 case by JETech Materials — The cover has a magnet on the right hand side of the case which keeps the case closed and safe from being scratched and damaged.
